About
The “Hot Rod Project” is designed to showcase the abilities of current WCC students in the Automotive and Autobody programs by allowing them to refurbish and customize a classic. The students are challenged to finish it in one years time. When the car is finished it will be taken to events and sites such as the county fair, car shows across NC, WCC Foundation Golf Tournament, Mt. Olive Pickle Festival, Daffodil Festival and all public high schools. At these events and over the next year cash drawing tickets will be sold to raise money to help support Automotive and Autobody student scholarships and sustain this project every year. One ticket will be pulled and the owner of that ticket will win the “Hot Rod Project” car.
Recently, Mr. Carol Overton, a student in the Autobody program, donated a 1954 Hudson Wasp to the college. In the Spring 2009 semester, students in the Automotive Systems Technology program began to work on different systems on the car as it relates to their classes. Once the car was stripped down the Autobody Repair students evaluated the sturcture of the car. It was determined that the project could not be finished in one year using the Hudson. It was decided we would use a portion of the $5000 grant, awarded from the Korschun Foundation, to purchase another car in better condition and the Hudson would be used for a future “Hot Rod Project”. Mr. Tony Martinez, another Autobody student, had a 1949 Plymouth that he was willing to part with for a reasonable price. He was already in the process of body repairs in his Autobody classes.
This should have brought you up to speed as to what the “Hot Rod Project” is about and the basis of the project car. Please check out the Sponsors Page to see some awesome sponsors who have donated to the project and the Project Progress page for up-to-date pictures and more.
